I have just listened to the podcast. It was excellent I attended his master class at the University of Toronto a few years ago. What a privilage. I have been fortunate that many years ago I heard him in South Africa (I am South African now Canadian!!!) and have also seen him in opera at Covent Garden. Need I tell you that I am an opera buff!!!

Wonderful podcast with a magnificent baritone who is not only an extremely talented singer but has the warmth of heart and spirit to make opera so accessible to the population. It is encouraging to see that he isn't to 'hang up his boots' any time soon since it's certain that the opera world can still benefit so much from his presence.

A very enlightening interview. Good to hear comments on favourite roles - how relevant it is for Sir Thomas to gain an understanding of the characters and the context of their lives in order to take on the role. The exploration of the issues around translation or singing in the original language was intriguing. The comments about the work that needs to be done in order to sing the role in one's own language was most interesting.

I have just listened to the podcast, what an inspirational man. I found it extremely interesting about his thoughts on singing in English and how it is so easy not to study the English text as you would automatically do with a foreign language. His voice is beautifully heart warming.

I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. I am a young bass-baritone in my last year of an undergrad degree in music. I have had many thoughts as to which road to take after grad school and such. Listening to Sir Thomas Allen's views of Opera and Recital together has given me some hope of being able to focus on both aspects in my musical life! Hope to hear more great Baritones and Basses in the future!

I too am a young Baritone, studying honors in music currently and have found many (including this one) of Mr Allen's interviews to be very helpful. He is an insightful individual who provides tangible advice and comment regarding most if not all subjects. While his quality of performance is something else indeed, as a young baritone i aspire to perform and sing as he does. The interview itself although not very long was informative and asked some very important questions of Allen. I did particularly like that he said he could NEVER just sing opera. I am also a fan of his push to make opera accessible to all. His story about the school was priceless. Keep the pod casts coming! :)

I was brought to this site after listening to the Proms concert this evening on BBC2 which was a celebration of the music from MGM musicals and one of the singers was Sir Thomas - it was truly wonderful to hear a much more light hearted, yet still glorious, program of music and it reminded me of the wonderfully warm voice. Being from the north east (but not quite as far north as Sir Thomas) is warms my heard greatly and passionately that such a lovely man brings music to our ears.
