Forum: Is Opera for teenagers?
Telegraph article about opera for teenagers

According to the article by Rupert Christianssen in the Telegraph on 26th May, teenagers can't be dragged to an opera even if it's for free. Is that true? Has anyone got any experience of this?

I started going to opera in my late teens, sometimes dragging family or friends in my wake.  I do think that opera has something of an unfair reputation as being stuffy, irrelevant, and/or hidebound.  La Scala's recent "Under30" advertising campaign seems to construct itself in deliberate opposition to this.

Maybe internet ads with film-style trailers would help?  The plots would make blockbusters pale.  FREE should be very attractive, certainly.  I think that actually going to an opera IS the ideal way to get acquainted with the form.   Maybe one of the difficulties is that perceptions are based on radio broadcasts--lots of singing in a probably-unknown language without visual cues--or concert performances where the action is lost?

I'm 18 years old and I am obsessed with opera and have been for about 3 years. All of the ones I've seen are on video or DVD, save 2 community theater Gilbert & Sullivan productions I was in. I would give anything to see pretty much any opera in real life, especially the Ring Cycle.

But it's the unfortunate truth that I don't know anyone my age who knows about opera at all or who would like to see one. I honestly don't think a lot of people my age have the patience to sit through one. Maybe it's something psychological, I don't know, but it makes me sad that I can't talk about something I really love with any of my peers.

On a different note, there are operas playing that I can get into for free? Where?

I'm sure there are programmes which will get you in to see opera.  I know that all the opera companies run a variety of projects for young people, particularly for people interested in singing. It's worth taking a look at your local opera and seeing if there's anything available for you. At the very least you'll find other, like-minded people.
