GFinfo 03 Jun 2008 at 10:46am (Report this message) I have an ulterior motive in that I run the information sites for Gerald Finley and Simon Keenlyside, and not surprisingly they are my favorite baritones in their particular repertoires. I also adore the recordings of Heinrich Schlusnus. Who are your favorites?

smitty 28 Jun 2008 at 8:54pm (Report this message) i always enjoyed leonard warrens work at the met in the 50s. i saw a performance of onigin with the bolshoi at the kennedy in 1976 the baritone in the ballroom scene sang his aria suberbly and literally stopped the show! those russian basses and baritines are really something. it always amused me that the only baritone to make it big in the movies was nelson eddy. a nice voice but a very stiff actor. |

wagnertuba 26 Dec 2009 at 4:12pm (Report this message) There are so many great opera singers ,past and present whom I admire that I can't pick a favorite . Among baritones, Fischer-Dieskau, Prey, Milnes, Hampson, Gobbi, Thomas Allen, Van Dam (really a bass-baritone), Terfel , Walter Berry , Nucci, just to name some . |

Leonore2 15 Feb 2010 at 3:54pm (Report this message) Un embarras des richesses, truly! One of my favorites is Ettore Bastianini. Tragically, he died while still in his prime, but there are many fine live and studio recordings of his work, often with Callas, Corelli, Tebaldi, Di Stefano, and other greats. Not only does he have a splendid voice, his acting through the voice has created portraits of morally complex characters like Renato (Anckarstrom) in Ballo and Gerard in Andrea Chenier which for me are unsurpassed. |

Walkyrie 15 Jun 2010 at 8:35pm (Report this message) Although I think he is more of a bass-baritone, Walter Berry as Papageno impresses me. |
