madaboutopera 31 Jan 2008 at 5:07pm (Report this message) My favourite soprano has always been Renata Tebaldi. Her lyricism, phrasing, her legato line and her diction were incomparable and she conveyed the pathos of Puccini heroines like no other. |

rigoletto 31 Jan 2008 at 7:12pm (Report this message) You can’t compare Tebaldi to Callas in the interpretation of Tosca. When it comes to drama Callas is way out in front The classic Callas/di Stefano/Gobbi recording will never be bettered |

madaboutopera 31 Jan 2008 at 8:38pm (Report this message) And what about Birgit Nilsson as Turandot in the RCA recording? Nobody conveyed the iciness of Turandot better than her and remember Tebaldi sang a beautifully pathetic Liu in that recording. |

Scarpia 06 Feb 2008 at 12:19pm (Report this message) Purely in terms of a sound of moving beauty, Leontyne Price has long been my favourite, but I'm now finding that the style and distinction of the late Regine Crespin means she is jostling for No 1 position! |

LorisIpanoff 28 Feb 2008 at 12:33am (Report this message) Biggest tingle factor I ever got live was hearing Renata Scotto in Verdi's Macbeth in London in 1981 - voice in shreds, but thrilling diction and living the role. Also loved Galina Vishnevskaya - only heard her live well past her best though. |
