Prima Donnas and Picnics

Britain’s regular companies take a little time off over July and August, but there is no shortage of festival opera to be enjoyed, as FRANCIS MUZZU reports

…is the Buxton Festival in Derbyshire. It’s not entirely operatic, but don’t miss the chance to visit to visit the ornate Edwardian theatre designed by Frank Matcham, also the architect of London’s Coliseum. Over the last few years the festival has really rejuvenated itself, and this year there are some interesting pieces to explore: The Poacher, by the neglected German composer Lortzing (opens July 10); a triple bill of two operas by Holst and one by Vaughan Williams (opens July 12); and Weill’s Street Scene, an interesting collaboration between the Opera Group and Young Vic, and featuring local young people too (opens July 13).
